Consistency

Consistency, this has been my "word" this year. At first it took me a little while to land on it, but consistency has definitely been MY word. I've been hyper conscious and have been trying to be more consistent WITH EVERYTHING!!

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. – Aristotle

It’s actually really hard to achieve, well for me anyway. The problem is that my passions and interests can sometime go in waves, and so too can my momentum and moods. I can be really engaged and going full steam ahead and then I’ll totally get derailed and fall off the track, by the smallest of roadblock. I think it must be an artist thing cause I know so many others that are also like this.

The other night I was chatting online with some friends and this topic of consistency came up in regards to blogging.

So on a whim I thought I'd go ahead and google the word consistency to see what type of imagery would come up. There was a interesting mix of arrows, bullseyes, graphs, cooking batter & frosting, and side by side comparison images, but the one that spoke to me was this one:"Consistency is Better Than Rare Moments of Greatness". Hmmmm what an interesting perspective. What do you think is Consistency really better than Rare Moments of Greatness? And is it that you only get to those "Moments of Greatness" by practicing your craft and being consistent?

It takes twenty years to become an overnight success. – Eddie Cantor

I've got my first 10 down now I only need 10 more :-)

sketchbook stories :: tara reed

Tara Reed is an amazing lady that not only licensed her own art work but also teaches other artists how to license too.  After knowing Tara for a few years thru the online virtual community, it was really great to finally meet her in person this past May at the Surtex Art Licensing Show. Tara's positive energy is truly refreshing and completely contagious!! I absolutely love her eternal optimism and truly believe that you need to put positive energy out into the world if you would like to receive it.

Here is Tara's Sketchbook Story ::

TR: This is from my "Concrete Jungle" collection.

TR: My inspiration comes from watching women walk the streets of NYC or trade shows or anywhere farther than 10 feet in high heeled shoes!  I don't know how they do it... my poor feet often hurt in the most comfortable shoes so I now paint cool shoes that I'd barely be able to take 5 steps in. :)

TR: I tried to show how I paint in pieces - each element is painted separately then I merge things together in Photoshop for the end result.  It lets the art stay flexible which is ideal for licensing - you have to be able to adapt art to different sizes, formats, manufacturer needs, etc.

TR: These are the Appetizer Plates that I designed for Thirstystone.

TR: Here's my affiliate link to buy said products (in case anyone can't live without them!) on Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/24d4ws2

Some Favorite Ornaments from Past Years & More about the Groups

I'm starting to get super excited!! I can't believe how many people have already signed up and it's only been a week since I first announced the Exchange! :-)  We are going to have a really awesome exchange this year!!

ornaments made by :: Sarah Davis

I also thought I'd do a little more explaining about how the groups work since I've been getting a few questions. After you sign up you will get a password to enter the group forum. On Monday Nov 28th on the Forum, I will announce the group assignment. Each group will have a fun quirky holiday name. (Last year we had names like, All the Trimmings, and Naughty and Nice) Each group will have a place to chat on the forum and as a group you can decide to do a theme or can agree to be surprised. You are free to make 3 of the same ornaments or make each one individual and different. It's really up to you :-) I always like to ask folks to say HI and share 1 fun or interesting thing that they did this year to break the ice and get folks chatting, since you will be exchanging ornaments with these folks, so you will get to make 3 and receive 3 handmade ornaments. It's a ton of fun.

A Wonderland Kind of Halloween

You may remember me talking about how my daughter went about choosing her Halloween costume, and how she really wanted me to dress up as Strawberry Shortcake. Well, I got out of that, but then was quickly coerced into being part of her ensemble and was reassigned the part of the Red Queen.

Well how the heck was I going to be able to pull that off. I just happened to have this red bridesmaid's dress sitting in the closed. It actually is a really nice dress that was custom made, but when was I ever going to wear it again? It had already been sitting there for over 4yrs.

So Ava Blu and I took a trip to Michael's the day before Halloween, picked up some felt and glue so we could modify the dress. And along the way Ava Blu got her face painted. Random I know, but they had a table set up in the middle of the store, and were doing it for free. What kid could resist that?

Then we headed home and started transforming a bridesmaid dress into the Red Queen!!

And if I was going to have to dress up, then so was my husband. He was assigned to play the part of the Mad Hatter and it truly became a family affair.

I think I may have a future thespian on my hands, because the whole night we had to address her as Alice and she would reciprocate by calling me the Red Queen and instruct me to say my lines: "Off With Her Head!".

We had a wonderful evening Trick or Treating with Ava Blu's BFF and their family all around the Island. I'm not sure how we are going to top it next year.

Okie Dokie Artichokie let's start Simplifying

One of my favorite things to make during the fall season!!  And I just love the way my daughter asks for Okie Dokie Artichokie. It's so stinkin' cute.

This season I've also started to pair down and simplify. In my house, I'm "in charge" of doing the dishes, which includes emptying and refilling the dishwasher. This task can sometimes get daunting when I have a sink overflowing with dirty dishes. So a friend recently asked "Do you have a lot of dishes?"  Well, yes I do, way more than we actually need. She recommend going down to 1 plate, 1 bowl, 1 cup and 1 set of silverware for each family member. What a fabulous idea!

Now, I don't necessarily think I can go to that extreme, so I decided to start to make the change gradually so last night I went thru our cuboards and went down to 2 set of dishes and silver for every family member. I thought that was a reasonable amount. We shall see if my husband notices that there are less dishes available.

Hopefully it will help me to keep my sink empty of all those dirty dishes. Has anyone else ever done something like this before? I'll keep you posted and let you know how it goes.

sketchbook stories :: mati rose mcdonough

I first met Mati (pronounced Matey, like the shipmate) over 8 years ago when we were both taking an evening Children’s Illustration Class at UC Berkeley Extension taught by Mira Reisberg. Since then Mati, has ventured off into this brave creative world making art and living a truly creative and inspiring life. I love the way she describer her journey of becoming an artist in her 2009 interview with [e]housestudio she says “Becoming an artist has been like climbing a mountain, but instead of going straight to the top, I’ve been going gradually around the mountain, getting distracted along the way by scraping my knees, setting up camp along the way and other fumbling and sustained moments of grace.”  I feel very luck to call her a friend and honored that she has asked me to be part of a group of creative ladies called the Ladies Independent Design League (LIDL). Mati is incredibly warm and inviting soul, and this comes thru in her work by the emotional bond she forms with her audience in a way that is uniquely hers.

Here is Mati's Sketchbook Story ::

MRM: I wasn't sure what to focus on for Sketchbook Stores, but then this illustration I did for Baby Bug Magazine just arrived in the mail! It's a super cute magazine for babies and toddlers that's in the same family as their older read, for bigger kids called Ladybug.

MRM: I got hired by Baby Bug to illustrate a poem called "Sleepy Sparrows" by Charlotte B. Deforest. They liked my collage work with birds like these 2 pieces.

MRM: The first step was I got sent a sample magazine and printed layout of the poem.

MRM: I researched sparrows on google images to get a general sense of their shape and colors and how they have been stylized by other artists.

MRM: I sketched in pencil a general layout and eyeballed where the poem would fit.

MRM: Then I colorized the sketch in photoshop, scanned in the text placing it digitally over the art, and made adjustments to the composition too, like the size of the sun and shape of the tree branch. This is the sketch I sent the client. The client's feedback was "We need to see the soft inside of the nest. Sparrows will line their nest with soft white feathers. The outside of the nest is made with course grass, string, sticks, pieces of cloth and white feathers. We would like to see more mixed media on the nest. Have one bird with it's eyes open. To add a little interest add a little bug sitting on the tree branch under the text. No need to send another sketch as these are small changes."

All of these changes seemed doable and great, especially given that the final would be in collage. I sorted through my collage paper to find similar colors to the ones I had proposed and then thought about how I could make the nest more mixed media. I decided to drop by the fabric store to see if there was anything that would help me and found these white feathers~ perfect!

MRM: You can see here that I added a little lady bug to add interest and opened the eyes of one of the sparrows. I cut up the paper on the nest to make it more tactile as well as the white feathers. I like how you can tell it is imperfect and done by hand. The client's reaction was "WOW! The final art is wonderful! Love it!!!!!!!"

MRM: Here is a close-up of the sparrows.

MRM: And here is the final that just arrived in the mail! Thanks Cindy for the opportunity to share my Sketchbook Story!
