up close and personal with an Van Eyck

Oh my gosh how cool is this!!! A friend of mine shared this link and I just had to share too!

I’m totally one of those people that gets asked to take a step back when I’m examining a painting in a museum. Now I can get my nose as close as I’d like with the only risk being getting a few smug marks on my monitor. AND, how cool is this? You can see the paintings in infrared and x-ray too!!

Closer to Van Eyck: Rediscovering the Ghent Altarpiece is the results of a research project to assess and record the paintings condition for conservation.

share out :: brave girls club

I’ve been seeing folks talking about the Brave Girls Club on facebook and twitter for a while now and thought it was about time I go see what it’s all about. When you register one of the questions they ask you is :

What does being Brave mean to you?

hummm…what a perfect question for me, seeing that I’ve been making “being brave” art for quite a while now.

So I didn’t hesitate a second and wrote this:

Being brave is doing those things that give you butterflies in your belly, but are necessary for you to grow and push beyond your comfort zone. Sometimes you need to put yourself out there and take a risk if you want to be seen and heard.

Short and sweet!

But I think it totally sums up my feeling around bravery.

Pearls Before Breakfast

I recently saw a bunch of facebook posts about Joshua Bell playing incognito in the subway. He was largely ignored by the adults that passed by despite the fact that his shows normally cost $100+ a seat and usually sell out.

I found it very intriguing that this was making it’s rounds now, since it actually happened back in April of 2007. I guess the message behind the story hits a nerve with so many folks that it doesn’t matter how long ago it happened.

You can miss what’s right in front of you if you don’t take the time to stop, look and listen. We are all so very busy with our busy lives rushing here and there that sometimes we can overlook what’s right in front of us.

So stop for a moment, watch and listen to this:

How many things do you think you miss and dismiss on a daily basis?

I need HELP!!! :: Seeking my next creative inter

Oh my gosh I’m gonna be needing some major help!! Just look at this place. I’m still not sure where everything is. I’ve just been making do, cause I’ve been THAT busy!! …AND my intern Denyss just wrapped up. I’m already missing her. :) Here’s what she has to say about her experience:

DF: Hola! I am a BayArea native and a graphic designer. I was given the pleasure to intern for the lovely and talented Cindy Ann. My experience for the past 6 months with her has been amazing. It has really opened up my eyes to a lot of wonderful things and people. It gave me confidence in myself and work. Cindy Ann provided me with so much inspiration, more than she will ever know. Thank you Cindy Ann for allowing me in your home, your space and for the opportunity. Until we meet again.

Love Always,

Here’s where you can find Denyss ::

creative hotlist

So as I say good-bye to Denyss I am looking forward to taking on my next creative apprentice.

I’m looking for someone who can help me organize my studio, process images, do some blogging and create layouts and assist with some administrative and arty production things. If you are friendly, organized and not afraid to take initiative, offer up any ideas or two, have mad photoshop & illustrator skills, and know your way around social media networks let’s chat.

Some of the things you will do will be:

Tradeshow Prep- Printing, creating and organizing show binders, portfolios and display materials. Filling out forms. Organizing, and packing.

Digital - Scanning and cleaning images for art. Formatting, posting and uploading files to my website and blog. Creating mechanicals and reformatting artwork. Updating online portfolios & doing layouts for promotional materials.

Administrative Prep- Putting together sample packs, compiling list of press contacts, follow-up, updating and maintaining mailing lists (include researching), sending e-mails.

This is a volunteer position, so I really want to find someone that will benefit from the experience. I would love to feed you, help you get school credit, and teach you all that I can about illustration and the art licensing industry. Scheduling can be flexible and you can work from home for some of your hours. My home studio is located in Oakland Hills and I am looking for at least a 6 month commitment.

If this sort of thing might interest you email me at cindyann@blupenny.com  and tell me a little about yourself and include links to your resume, blog, website, shop, twitter, or anything else you’d like to share. And answer the following questions: Name your top 3 favorite artist or illustrators. Why are you interested in this position and what you hope to gain from the experience. I’ll email you from there. :-)

And of course, if you know anyone in the SF Bay Area that you think might be interested please feel free to pass this along.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you!!

My 29-Day Giving Challenge :: Day 29

my 29-day challenge ended softly::

With a trip to the park (even thought I didn’t really want to go) and some super snuggle time.

wrap up:

Going thru the steps to consciously give everyday pushed me outside of my comfort zone and expanded my boundaries. It made me take action on things I would often think about but wouldn’t necessarily follow thru and do. Making that extra effort to effect someone else’s life even in the smallest of ways was exciting and it actually gave me a little jolt of happiness and pride. I’m so glad I did it!!

My 29-Day Giving Challenge :: Day 28

Some words of encouragement ::

I went to high school with Bridget. What I remember most is being in awe of her talent and outward courage to express herself. Bridget was always so self confident and never cared about what others thought. < I sooo wanted to be like that, but alas deep down I did care (and a bit too much).

Bridget is an awesomely talented lady and I just know she’s going to totally Rock It at MassArt!!

My 29-Day Giving Challenge :: Day 27

second chances::

Everyone deserves one and on this day I was happy to give one out to Ava Blu. (granted she get’s more second chances then anyone else I know. But then again she’s only 5.)
